This is a central truth of every human generation before us, and every generation after. We are neither devils nor saints, and all the teeth gnashing and fist shaking in the world will not make of us what we are not. We thought we would make the world a paradise and those who come after us think the same.
They will learn what we learned: With birth we are each given a hand to play — time, place, body, mind — and we play that hand in a game we learn as we go. No one can teach us the entire game because no one knows all the rules. The game goes on for each of us until we cash out our chips and leave the table, and no one wins or loses.
But our children will always judge how we played the game, certain they, in their turn, will win.
As for this growing wave of “struggle sessions” over “Boomers”, I say: My name is not what you call me. It’s what I answer to.
