In spring of 1967 I needed to get ready for Little League tryouts, Farm level. My dad took me to the sporting goods store to pick out my first — it would become my only — fielding glove. He was a staunch Dodger fan, but he was also practical. He showed no favorite, just asked me to try them all on until I found one I liked. I tried on maybe a dozen and picked that one. So he bought it, along with some new baseballs, a bat and a little bottle of neatsfoot oil. Only in the car on the drive home, while I sat popping a ball into it, did he say that it would be a good luck glove because Maury Wills was a great Dodger.
It was one of the good days.
